Any person older than 18 years, who is permanently resident in South Africa, may apply for appointment as an WEF Volunteer. Those younger than 18 years may join as a Junior ENVIRO-Hero (Junior WEF Volunteers).
There is no limitation on the number of WEF Volunteers. Applicants generally have a certain field or aspect of Conservation and/or Sustainable Development where they would like to get involved in. The WEF Volunteers have a wide selection of courses which are presented to help assist volunteers to develop this interest.
Once the application has been approved, the applicant will receive a valid membership number and badge and, if possible, will be required to attend the WEF new membership introduction course. The new applicant also needs to remain active as a volunteer and attend the meetings in his/her area.
The WEF needs a variety of skills and most qualifications could therefore be extremely helpfull. A specific qualification in nature conservation is not required to join the WEF Volunteers. Typically, a WEF volunteer assists in the following areas: education, communication, professional services, events, media, marketing and fundraising and other projects. There is however a diversity of areas in which members can be used and all skills are potentially valuable. The most important qualification remains enthusiasm, a positive attitude and a willingness to get involved.
To become a WEF Volunteers an application form must be completed, and submitted (by direct online submission, post, fax or e-mail) to the WEF's Executive Committee. The application form (see link below) highlights the applicants's skills, experience and reason(s) for applying. A passion, love for and dedication to nature, the environment, conservation and sustainable development ("green living") is a prerequisite.
Completed applications may also be send to any of the contact addresses below:
